Ben Price is one of the 5 dads aiming to cycle round the M25 in 2 days in aid of the CSA this month. Ahead of his epic journey we caught up with him to ask him a few questions. You can support Ben and the Dads at www.justgiving.com/M25Dads
Q. So who are you and which classes are your children in?
Ben Price and I have 3 daughters. Amy in 3SM at the Junior School and Claudia in Robin at the Infants. My youngest, Léonie, will start at the nursery in September.
Q. What was your first thought when the idea was put to you?
I thought it was a great fundraising idea for the CSA and hopefully it will help promote cycling amongst the kids.
Q. What bike do you ride?
I have a couple. An older aluminium Merida for winter rides and a Giant Defy Advanced SLR 2 road bike for summer months and events. It’s frame is carbon fibre so is very light. It’s fair to say that the Giant is significantly more advanced and capable than the rider.
Q. What are you most looking forward to?
We’ve planned the first day to be just over 100 miles which is considered the cycling equivalent of a marathon so I think all 5 of us are looking forward to the sense of achievement from that. Beyond that, I am looking forward to the finishing line.
Q. What are you least looking forward to?
Where to begin?! The hills. Getting back on the bike at the start of day 2. The sore back, bum, groin, hamstrings, calfs and feet. Having to watch the other guys apply chafe cream every 10 miles. Not to mention being foolish enough to sign up for a sprint triathlon in Henley that starts less than 24hrs after finishing on sat!
Q. How is the training going?
Over the last few weeks it has gone better but I don’t think any of the 5 of us are under any illusions that 175 miles over two days represents a real challenge at our ability level.
Q. Men in lyrca look odd? What do you say to that?
Outrageous. Mamils (middle aged men in Lycra) are acknowledged to be objects of desire across the land.
Q. What’s the furthest you’ve ever ridden in one day to date?
Just under 90k, or just over half the distance we’re aiming for on day 1 of this challenge.
